The Creative Writing Program at Souderton Area High School incorporates a variety of challenges for students within the writing genres. A variety of narrative writing, both fiction and non-fiction is explored, as is poetry. Some of the special topics of interest include writing the scary story, the science-fiction story, the memoir, the slice-of-life narrative, and the film noir script. Students also create character profiles by working through a character development project that includes inventing a photo story in line with the characterization. Students eventually develop the framework for a potential novel or novella, writing a unified, longer story - one which, for many of them, is the most comprehensive piece they have written to date.

Additionally, students read and write poetry, celebrating their best work at the end of the poetry unit, often working directly with poets from the PoetryWITS (Writers in the Schools), affiliated with The Montgomery County Poet Laureate Program (MCPL).

At the culmination of the semester, students choose two works which are published in the Souderton Area High School Literary Magazine. Advanced Creative Writing II students are additionally required to submit two works developed over the course of the semester for competition or publication; they are required to choose to a source beyond Souderton Area High School.
