Hestovatohkeo'o
a recipe for Standing Rock

When all the trees have been cut down, when all the animals have been hunted, when all the waters are polluted, when all the air is unsafe to breathe, only then will you discover you cannot eat money.
-- Cree Prophecy

Use cruciferous bills, cut and folded
to cover the eyes of dead presidents.

Hose pepper spray and tear gas to distaste.
No need to salt-the meat will brine itself.

Spray liberally over a raised tarp
and anyone bracing themselves beneath.

Tenderize the meat. Try using batons,
ballistic shields, rubber bullets, blunt force

trauma to the spirit. When the meat stops
wading through water, protecting its dead,

it is ready. Strain out the dignity,
then puree it all into formless paste.

Garnish with a scrap of thunderbird flag
and a quick drizzle of light sweet crude oil.

For place settings, fold treaties into swans,
let the graceful arch of their paper necks

ache for the cleaver. Arrange the three forks
neatly beside the glass of red Bakken.

The name translates to "Double Face," a man-
like monster who's hiding his second smile

behind him, teeth pointed as promises,
who tricks you into seeing his true face

before slowly eating you. One nation
underwater, boiling to tastelessness.
