JOANNE LEVA

Joanne LevaAn advocate for creative writing and community service, Joanne is the founder and Executive Director of the Montgomery County Poet Laureate Program (MCPL). The competition, its related readings, and poetry event (featuring a celebrity poet with a national reputation), comes to its successful fruition in April, National Poetry Month.

An active poet herself, Joanne has been writing and performing her original poetry since 1991. She has organized poetry readings at Headhouse Square for Earth Day, the Seven Arts Fest on South Street, the Theater of Living Arts (TLA), The Ambler Theater, Musehouse Literary Arts Center, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Joanne holds a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design from Arcadia University, a Marketing Writing Certificate in Biomedical Writing from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP), and is the recipient of the Philadelphia Writer’s Conference (PWC) Community Service Award (2011).

CPL Executive Director Joanne Leva is the recipient of the Philadelphia Writers Conference Community Service Award, for her dedication and tireless work on the Philly literary scene, helping other poets and writers, and for her creation and devotion to the Montgomery County Poet Laureate Program. This is not an annual award -- the last time the PWC Board felt compelled to honor someone was back in 1996... and there have been many who have volunteered on our lit scene in Philly in the meantime-- which gives you the idea of how very special Joanne is, and how much she has contributed to all of us, and how much her hard work is appreciated. Leva received the award at at the 2011 Philadelphia Writers Conference Banquet on June 4th, 2011.

While poetry is becoming hot in popular culture, Joanne Leva ’84 has been stoking the poetry fires for 20 years. Leva, who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Arts, is the founder and director of the Montgomery County Poet Laureate Program, a nonprofit organization that promotes the arts by offering programs for local residents.
